This piece is an informational podcast, tied to this blog, Love the Dirt, and focuses on tips to build a better garden. This included an interview with a local master gardener, Kirk Fortune, and his opinions and advice in achieving a successful garden. For this segment, I wanted to discuss the difference in the impersonal environment of the supermarket and how cold and transactional it can be, with how it conflicts with the pleasant feeling of purchasing locally-sourced food at a farmer's market or even growing it in your own backyard. I recorded various ambient sounds familiar to a grocery store including: the register dings, distant overhead messages, and subtle background music. For the sounds associated to gardening, I recorded water falling on soil, birds chirping, and the sound of moving dirt. I then layered these sounds in Adobe Audition, for my initial narration, which discussed the benefits to both the self and the community that gardening and locally-sourced foods provide, as opposed to the cold, convenience of a supermarket.

The interview with Mr. Fortune was in his home and in his backyard, where he walked me around and discussed the different fruits and vegetables that were in season and his well-regarded tips for a successful planting. I then edited this with the layers of previously recorded narration and ambient sounds to create a cohesive segment. I have chosen to include this in my portfolio to show another side in my ability to develop appropriate marketing and promotional materials for a business or nonprofit organization.
